Can Robot Vacuums Move Between Rooms?
Yes—on one continuous floor, most modern robot vacuums can travel through open doorways and clean multiple rooms. Threshold height, closed doors, clutter, map quality and stairs determine where they can actually go.

Five requirements for reliable room-to-room cleaning
Open access
Doors must remain open and lightweight objects should not swing or shift into the route during cleaning.
Passable thresholds
The robot needs enough wheel traction and clearance to cross each transition in both directions.
A usable map
Mapped models need correct room boundaries, dock location and no-go zones that do not block the passage.
Clear navigation
Cables, shoes, rug fringe and narrow chair layouts near doorways can prevent reliable passage.
Enough runtime
Large layouts may require recharge-and-resume support to finish distant rooms.
Robot vacuums cannot climb stairs
Cliff sensors are designed to help avoid drops, not climb between levels. Never place the dock where the robot must cross stairs, and do not disable or cover cliff sensors. Use secure stair boundaries and supervise a new map until the edges are proven reliable.
Why thresholds cause trouble
Height is only one factor
- A rounded threshold can make wheels lose traction
- A sharp vertical edge may stop the bumper
- A soft rug edge can fold under the robot
- A metal track may be slippery
- The robot may cross one way but not return
Before adding a ramp
- Check the robot’s published climbing limit
- Measure the highest point and approach angle
- Confirm the ramp is stable and not a trip hazard
- Protect doors, flooring and weather seals
- Test under supervision from both directions
Do not rely only on a seller’s universal-ramp claim. Fit and safety depend on the doorway and the robot’s chassis.
How mapping changes the experience
May cross rooms without labels
The robot can travel through open doorways but may clean less predictably and cannot always target a named room.
Room-specific control
You can usually name, split, merge and schedule rooms, then set cleaning order and suction or mopping preferences.
Separate maps for each level
Some models recognize stored floor maps when carried upstairs. Confirm whether the dock must move and how map selection works.
Set up a successful first map
Open the intended doors
Keep access consistent during mapping so the robot discovers every room you want included.
Clear each doorway
Remove shoes, cables, lightweight mats and other temporary obstacles from transitions.
Place the dock correctly
Use a level, stable location with the clearances stated in the manual and a route to major rooms.
Complete one uninterrupted map
Avoid carrying the robot or moving the dock during its initial mapping run.
Edit room boundaries
Name rooms and correct divisions before creating detailed schedules or cleaning zones.
Test the farthest room
Send the robot there, observe the doorway crossing, then confirm it can return and dock.
Using one robot on multiple floors

Never carry a robot by its LiDAR turret, bumper or movable cover. Use the manufacturer’s recommended lifting points.
Room transitions can change the floor rules
A robot moving from tile to wood or carpet must apply the correct mopping behavior. Configure carpet avoidance, mop lifting or no-mop zones as supported. Do not assume automatic carpet detection is suitable for every rug or floor.
If the robot skips one room
- Confirm the door stayed open for the full run.
- Check whether a no-go line overlaps the doorway.
- Remove loose rugs, cords and reflective objects near the entrance.
- Clean cliff, wall, camera or LiDAR sensors as directed.
- Run a supervised room-specific test.
- Correct room divisions or rebuild the map only if simpler fixes fail.
