Direct play sends the original file and is always preferable. Transcoding becomes necessary when the client cannot decode the video/audio, bandwidth is limited, subtitles must be burned in, or HDR tone mapping is required. No product can guarantee a fixed number of 4K transcodes for every file.

Streaming NAS questions
Do I need Plex Pass?
Direct play and basic Plex use do not require it. Plex hardware-accelerated streaming generally requires an active Plex Pass subscription. Check Plex’s current plan terms before buying.
Is Jellyfin completely free?
Jellyfin is open-source and does not charge for its server features. Hardware acceleration still requires compatible hardware, drivers and correct configuration.
Can a NAS stream 4K?
Yes. Direct-play 4K is relatively easy. Live 4K transcoding—especially HDR tone mapping—is much harder and depends on the codec, bitrate, subtitles and client.
Is HDMI necessary?
No. Most NAS streaming sends media over Ethernet to a TV app, Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, Shield or another client. HDMI is useful only for direct local playback.
Are two bays enough?
Yes for a modest library. Four bays provide better growth, more flexible RAID and potentially higher sequential performance.
Should I buy SSDs for movies?
Usually not. Hard drives are more economical for bulk media. NVMe SSDs are more useful for apps, metadata, containers or cache than storing the entire movie library.
How fast should the network be?
Gigabit Ethernet handles many household direct-play streams. 2.5GbE makes file transfers and multi-user access faster, but the TV itself may still connect at 100Mbps or 1Gbps.
Does RAID back up my media?
No. RAID helps the server remain available after a drive failure. Keep a second copy of irreplaceable photos, home videos and documents elsewhere.
Why not recommend an ARM NAS?
ARM models can be excellent direct-play servers, but Intel integrated graphics offers a clearer path when Plex or Jellyfin must transcode video.
