Homelab NAS questions

Should I run Docker or virtual machines?

Containers use fewer resources and suit most self-hosted applications. Use a VM when you need a separate operating system, stronger isolation or software that cannot run in a container.

How much memory do I need?

Eight gigabytes is enough for light containers. Sixteen gigabytes is a comfortable starting point for a mixed lab. Consider 32GB or more for several VMs, databases or memory-heavy indexing.

Do I need 10GbE?

Not for basic services. It helps with VM storage, large backups, multi-user transfers and workstation editing. Your switch and clients must also support the faster speed.

Can Home Assistant run on a NAS?

Usually yes through Docker or a VM, depending on the NAS platform. USB radio passthrough and supervised installation requirements need special attention.

Should applications use NVMe?

Databases, VM disks and application metadata benefit from NVMe random performance. Bulk files normally remain more economical on hard drives.

Is RAID a backup?

No. RAID helps availability after a disk failure. Keep another copy of configurations, encryption keys, photos, documents and databases elsewhere.

Can I expose my NAS directly to the internet?

Avoid direct exposure when possible. Prefer a VPN or secure tunnel, restrict ports, use MFA, update promptly and maintain tested backups.

Which file system is best?

Btrfs and ZFS provide useful integrity and snapshot features, but each NAS supports different implementations. Choose based on recovery tools and your workload, not the name alone.

Should I buy a NAS or build a server?

A NAS is compact, power-efficient and easier to maintain. A custom server offers more CPU, memory and operating-system freedom but requires more assembly and administration.
