Business NAS questions

How many bays should a small business buy?

Four or five bays suit many small offices. Six or eight bays provide more RAID flexibility, capacity and growth for creative teams or larger datasets.

Is RAID 5 safe for business data?

It can suit smaller arrays and noncritical workloads, but RAID 6 provides tolerance for two drive failures. Neither replaces backups.

Do we need ECC memory?

ECC can detect and correct certain memory errors and is desirable for important business storage. It does not replace snapshots, backups or application-level integrity.

When is 10GbE worthwhile?

It helps creative teams, large backups, virtualization and many simultaneous users. The switch, cabling and workstations must also support the speed.

Can a NAS protect against ransomware?

It can reduce impact through least-privilege access, immutable or protected snapshots, MFA and isolated backups. No NAS alone guarantees protection.

Should the NAS join our directory?

Directory integration can simplify user lifecycle and permissions. Test failover and preserve an emergency local administrator account securely.

Do we need two NAS systems?

A second NAS in another location can provide fast replication and recovery. It should not share credentials that allow ransomware to erase both copies.

How often should backups be tested?

Test representative files regularly and perform broader recovery exercises based on business risk. A successful backup job is not proof of a successful restore.

Desktop or rackmount?

Desktop NAS systems are quieter and economical. Rackmount models suit server rooms and may offer redundant power, easier service access and standardized infrastructure.
